When it comes to stepping up for family, Grandma Randi is always first in line. As the loving and spirited mother of NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes, she’s no stranger to the spotlight—but it’s her behind-the-scenes role as “Grandma Randi” to Patrick’s three young children that has captured hearts in a whole new way.
While Patrick and his wife Brittany often travel for business, games, or charity events, they never worry about who’s watching the kids. Grandma Randi has become a rock in their lives, offering not just care and structure—but magic.
The Birth of “Adventure Kingdom”
In a recent interview with a local Kansas City magazine, Randi shared a sweet story about a special tradition she’s created with her grandchildren—a homemade game she calls Adventure Kingdom.
“It started one evening when the power went out for a little while,” Randi explained, chuckling. “The kids were getting restless, so I grabbed a couple of flashlights, some blankets, and a crown from one of their dress-up boxes—and Adventure Kingdom was born.”
The game, now a beloved ritual, transforms the Mahomes household into a castle filled with imaginative quests. Grandma Randi plays the Queen of the Kingdom, and each child takes on a different role—brave knight, clever sorcerer, or speedy messenger. Together, they complete missions ranging from “rescuing” stuffed animals to building magical forts out of couch cushions.
“It’s all about using their imagination and learning to work together,” Randi said. “I give them little scrolls with riddles or tasks, and they solve them as a team. It gets them thinking, moving, and laughing—and it gives me the most precious memories.”
No Screens, Just Magic

In a time when screens can easily dominate a child’s attention, Adventure Kingdom is refreshingly analog. No tablets, no television—just story, character, and connection.
“They don’t even ask for cartoons when we’re playing,” Randi said with pride. “They’re too busy creating their own world. And honestly, it brings out the kid in me, too.”
She rotates themes each time they play. Some nights, the Kingdom is under a “dragon spell,” while other times they must find a “hidden treasure” buried somewhere in the house. The game ends with a celebratory feast—usually snacks in the living room while wearing paper crowns.
A Family Bond Beyond Football
Though Patrick is one of the most well-known athletes in the world, Randi says it’s the simple family moments that matter most.
“I raised Patrick to value family, and now I see him and Brittany doing the same,” she shared. “I may be ‘Grandma Randi’ to the world now, but to them—I’m just their queen in fuzzy slippers and a glittery crown.”
When asked how Patrick feels about the game, she smiled.
“Oh, he laughs when he hears the stories. Sometimes I catch him sneaking a look at the scrolls I’ve written for them. He tells me, ‘Mom, I don’t know how you do it,’ and I tell him, ‘It’s easy—you just love them.’”
Future Plans for Adventure Kingdom?

Randi hinted that she’s considering turning Adventure Kingdom into a children’s book or even a board game—something she can share with other families.
“If this game can bring joy to my grandkids, maybe it can do the same for others,” she said. “It’s not about perfection—it’s about presence.”
As the Mahomes family continues to shine on and off the field, it’s clear that their foundation is built on love, imagination, and the steady, joyful presence of one extraordinary grandmother.
Because in the kingdom of childhood, it turns out that Grandma really does rule.
