A Tragedy in Dormanstown

The Redcar community is in mourning following the devastating death of three-month-old Maggie-May Ann Moody, who was killed in a suspected dog attack on Thursday, April 9, 2026. Armed police rushed to a property on Hardale Grove in Dormanstown shortly after 1:30 PM following reports of a child not breathing. Despite the efforts of emergency responders and specialists at James Cook University Hospital, the infant—who was just one day away from turning three months old—succumbed to a catastrophic head injury.

“She Gave Us Meaning”

In a raw and emotional statement released today, April 24, Maggie-May’s family expressed the profound void left by her passing. “Maggie changed us in so many ways,” the family shared. “She was everything to us. She gave us meaning and purpose every day and we feel empty.” The tribute described a “beautiful lifetime” that was stolen from them, noting that her older brother and sister had already begun making “plans for the rest of their lives” with their baby sister. The family remained by her side in the hospital until the very end, stating, “Our lives will never be the same again.”

The Investigation into “Pocket Bullies”

As the inquest opened at Middlesbrough Town Hall earlier this week, harrowing details emerged about the moments leading up to the attack. Initial accounts suggest two dogs, which were originally in the rear garden, managed to make their way into the room where Maggie was located. While neighbors described the animals as “pocket bully-type” crossbreeds, Cleveland Police confirmed that a specialist assessment deemed the dogs were not a prohibited breed. Armed officers destroyed one dog on the street immediately following the incident, and a second dog from the property has since been put down.

Three Arrests as Community Reels

The investigation has led to the arrest of three people, none of whom are related to the family. A 45-year-old man, a 36-year-old man, and a 31-year-old woman were all detained on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing death. The woman was also arrested on suspicion of child neglect. All three have since been released on conditional bail. As floral tributes and teddy bears pile up outside the Hardale Grove home, Chief Superintendent Rachel Stockdale urged the public to respect the family’s privacy while officers continue to piece together the “tragic and distressing” events.
