Coronation Street’s Antony Cotton has opened up about working on the soap and recalled a rather nerve-wracking moment
A seasoned Coronation Street actor has revealed the moment on the soap that had his heart “literally pounding out of my chest”.
Antony Cotton first appeared as Sean on the ITV soap back in 2003, following television roles in programmes such as Channel 4’s Queer As Folk and BBC’s Absolutely Fabulous.
It’s safe to say Sean quickly established himself as one of the programme’s iconic and cherished characters, with Antony securing numerous awards including a National Television Award for most popular newcomer.
The Rovers Return barman has also featured in several major storylines throughout the years – from experiencing homelessness to becoming father to Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne), reports the Daily Star.

And in a recent interview, Antony was questioned about the most memorable scene he’s ever filmed on the programme, Antony told Smooth Spins Casino: “The biggest thing was the tram crash. We crashed the tram on live television. That was the boldest thing ever done on telly at the time.
“It was done live with live CGI happening. I had the first line of that episode. I had to run out of the pub and shout, ‘What’s happened?’
“For the first and only time we could all hear the theme tune in our earphones. Normally somebody just says, ‘Turning over in three, two, one, action.’ But because it was live we could hear the theme tune and I was thinking how long does the theme tune last.
“My heart was literally pounding out of my chest and I fell out of the pub doors shouting, ‘What’s gone on? What’s happened?’ That was iconic and I’m very privileged to have been part of it.”
What’s more, having spent more than twenty years on the soap, Antony has witnessed numerous stars arrive and depart. However, it seems he’s not particularly fussed about any former favourites staging a return as he is “more interested in who’s new coming in”.
He said: “These things are of the time and those times are gone so we mustn’t live in the past. I’m more interested in who’s new coming in. My great pal Tony Maudsley who plays George, I love that character. His new girlfriend [Christina] is played by Amy Robbins who I absolutely love. When somebody comes in fully formed like that I love watching it.
“I remember Katherine Kelly the same way when she first appeared as Becky. She had one scene outside the factory smoking a cigarette and I thought there’s an icon born. I honestly think that about Amy Robbins as well.”
Nevertheless, Antony disclosed he would welcome Ian McKellen [who played Mel Hutchwright] making a comeback. Antony added: “I was very lucky because I went to Oldham Theatre Workshop so many of my friends have been in the show. Sally Lindsay [who played Shelley Unwin] and Samia Jones [who plays Maria Connor]”
