Prue Leith has confirmed she is stepping away from The Great British Bake Off after nine years as a judge, admitting it simply felt like the “right time to step back” — and now reports suggest a blockbuster replacement could already be waiting in the wings.
The TV chef, who joined the Channel 4 show in 2017 following Mary Berry’s exit, announced her decision on Instagram, revealing she has judged more than 400 challenges during her time in the famous tent.

Prue, who turns 86 next month, wrote that Bake Off had been a “fabulous part” of her life and said she would miss working alongside fellow judge Paul Hollywood and hosts Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond. However, she made it clear the decision was her own, joking that at 86 there were “so many things” she still wanted to do — including spending her summers enjoying her garden.
She added that whoever replaces her will “love it as much as I have” and said she felt incredibly lucky to have been part of the show.
Following her announcement, production company Love Productions paid tribute to Prue’s “genuine expertise”, warmth towards the bakers and her talent for dropping innocent innuendos that regularly left the tent — and viewers at home — in stitches. Channel 4’s Ian Katz also praised her “ineffable style”, saying she leaves an indelible mark on the programme.

But the Bake Off story may already be entering a bold new chapter. According to reports, Nigella Lawson is being lined up as Prue’s replacement, with insiders claiming contract talks are in their final stages. A TV source suggested bosses are excited about how Nigella’s globally recognised charm, cheeky banter and famously playful innuendo could “heat up” the tent.
Nigella, 66, is no stranger to judging roles, having appeared on MasterChef Australia and served as a main judge on My Kitchen Rules. Her bestselling cookbooks and sensual on-screen style have made her one of Britain’s most recognisable food personalities.

While neither Nigella nor Channel 4 have confirmed the reports, the prospect of her joining Paul Hollywood has already sparked intense fan debate. Bake Off last aired in September 2025, with student Jasmine Mitchell crowned winner in November, and is expected to return later this year — potentially with a very different dynamic in the tent.
